We waited a little over a year for our 2022 Tesla Model X Long Range. We ordered a 6-seat configuration, white exterior paint, and cream interior. We loved it. But it had many different issues. Throughout the year, I had numerous service appointments. Some issues were fixed, other issues were reoccurring. Eventually, we decided to submit a buyback request to Tesla after the last service appointment which resulted in a steering rack replacement. This car is less than a year old.
The buyback process is not a trade in or a swap. Vehicles have VIN assigned to them. You cannot just swap or trade it in for another. Tesla will buy back the car at a price they will offer to you. The ownership will be transferred from you to them. They will send you a check for the approved amount. You can do whatever with the money. Buy another Tesla, buy something else, or don’t buy another car. We paid cash for our Model X. I am not sure what happens if you financed the car.
Here is the timeline I went through
2023-08-16 – The steering rack is replaced. This is when I decided to submit the buyback request to Tesla. The service manager collected the service history and prepared the documents to send to headquarters.
2023-09-08 – I received an email approving my buyback request from Tesla. The email did not include how much they are offering but at this point, we needed to find another vehicle to replace the Model X. At this time, the only other EV in a similar size is the Rivian R1S. But we did not have a dealership or service center nearby. We did not want to go back to gas even though we miss having a minivan. Our only choice is another Model X. The cost of the Model X has dropped. It is now more affordable to get the Plaid trim. That’s what we went with. This time in Ultra Red and same cream interior color.
2023-09-12 – We received an offer of the full amount of our purchase price which was $119,569.35 and an additional $1,107 for our registration renewal. We were extremely happy of this offer and accepted it.
2023-09-18 Received an email to set up a surrender date. We selected a date as late as possible because we will not be provided a loaner or rental car while waiting for our new car to be delivered.
